Hi Guys, Can a single unit create he full size template (20cm*20cm ), or does it require more than one.

Otherwise it seems that you can pretty much cover the entire battlefield...

Same template for all types - so 20cm Diameter for Arty, 30 for MLRS etc.

This is one of the things I don't particularly like about the rules. That being the artillery templates are too big. I've seriously considered reducing them by half or maybe using Warhammer templates.

Sorry but if anything the artillery areas are too small- I refer you to Jim Dunnigan's How To Make War. gives the lethal radii for most NATO and Soviet shells. Remember that a fire unit represents 4 - 6 guns.

As to chemicals, I've always found them to be pretty ineffective, and a great advantage to the defender.

Albeit for BKC the author acknowledged that arty templates were too large in the rules, being based on what he calls artillery battalion shoots. He offers alternative diameters of: 10 cm for one "unit", 20 cm for 2 and 30 cm for 3 or more.

For reference, according to British Army's TAMs dated '98-'00 the effective areas for artillery are:

105mm Lt Gun
1 Bty = 200m sq
2 Bty = 250m sq
3 Bty = 350m sq

155mm AS90/FH70
1 Bty = 200m sq
2 Bty = 300m sq
3 Bty = 400m sq

12 MLRS Rockets (that's individual rockets, not launchers) will neutralise a 500 x 500m area using bomblet ammo or sew mines over a similar area.

IIRC there's a note in CWC saying that the area covered doesn't represent the entire area being saturated with fire but rather the units within that area are the focus of the artillery's attention.
