Hi,

I am new to the historical 6mm world and want to start building a Soviet force '85-'90 to invade my friends Swedish island of Gotland.

I do own a painted GHQ Moderns Soviet Combat Command box and would like to expand it a bit but I do not really know what to get... I am thinking about getting some more T-80s, Some nice AA, Artillery and maybe more infantry.

Any suggestions on what to buy? I would like to be quite historically correct but not on behalf of coolness... Smile

I think our table will be a 8*4 or maybe only a 6*4.

GHQ has free order of battle information for many countries located in their military models catalog under free stuff.

http://www.ghqmodels.com/pages/military/in...

This is the direct link to the Russian order of battle information
http://www.ghqmodels.com/pdf/29Russia_USSR...

Each element is a platoon so can be directly used for Cold War Commander. Infantry support elements at the company level would be ATGM for BTR and AGS-17 Grenade Launchers for BMP

The Fire and Fury website has a great OOB section for Cold War forces - it uses 1 stand equals two real world vehicles. I found that really useful for building up useful OOBs.

If you're going with 1985-90, it's worth remembering that most T-80s would be serving against NORTHAG and CENTAG facing the best of the NATO armour. I have no idea what the Russians would have allocated to capture Gotland, but at a guess either VDV or Marine infantry, so you would probably not want a lot of up to date armour, mainly upgraded T-55s and T-72s, plus lots of infantry in BMPs or even BTR-50s as I doubt it would have been allocated to 1st echelon troops. Lots of opportunity for some internet research to find a suitable set of units. I doubt the island would have been garrisoned with front line troops either, some sort of territorial force would be my guess.

Cheers, Andy

The troops for the Northern area of operations would be from Leningrad MD. Divisions had T-72 and T55 with various upgrades. APC's would be BMP, and certain divisions would have had MTLB instead of BTR-60/70/80.

Upgraded T-55's - they look well tasty Smile

Although as it's the pre-boxed Combat Command the OP likely already has T-80's, and as it's "campaign specific" I think Gitland must have been promoted to "area of strategic vital-ness", so top end kit has been supplied to make sure it falls Wink

Use the real world TOE's as a guide, and interpret according to taste and your campaign background.

I much prefer Gitland, so many places could fall into that category at times. LOL.

Wow, thanks for a lot of good answers...

I could imagine some kind of airborne battalion or similar. Maybe not a lot of T-80.

Today we have Leopard2s on Gotland I think. Maybe no crews, but there are tanks there... I have a couple of friends who where in the army during the 80s. I'll see if I can get them to tell me anything... Smile
