If the end in sight every german soldier got the chance to write a letter. It was the 20th of january 1943 just 67 yeras ago.
This last letters were flown out, but nether reached their addressees.
The Heeresinformationsabteilung checked their matter to see the mood of the men.
This was the result:

a) postive to the kind of warfare 2,1 %
b) doubting 4,4 %
c) faithless, deprecatory 57,1 %
d) oppostional 3,7 %
e) indifferent 33,0 %

Therefore the letters were confiscated and Heinz Schröter the author of this book got them all to write a history of the battle.
Hitler didn´t like the result and the book was publicated first a few years after the war.
I got the book as a present of my dad when I was a boy. I still have it and I like it very much. Schröter has a little special style. A lot of stories!

"There drives a truck loaded with 30 wounded. It is a convey of 5 vehicles and they speed to the airport. A formation of bombers fly in direction of the airfield just 500 meters high. The first truck accelerates the last decelerates to increase the range between the vehicles. The bombs were dropped. The first car shouldn´t drive so quick or just quicker. 23 of the 30 men are dead, the driver got blown out of the truck and is lying in the snow. Blood is runing down his face. And he is gripping ito the pocket of his coat to get a hanky. He finds a gung and pulls it out. It is the half of the head of his comrade who those sitting beneath him before the attack. And he is now always thinking at it and can´t touch hairs anymore."

I have the older edition from 1958!Grin

But there is a newer one from 1992. But not shure if there is a translation.
