Essentially sums it up in one easy sentence, but it's an article worth reading for anyone interested in Arab-Isreali, Iraq-Iran etc. not a book, I know, and is one Americans perspective, but an interesting read.

Yes, an oldie, but a goodie.

Arab troops are very good in a pre-planned, well-rehersed operation, but once an opponent introduces something outside the plan, things start to go very wrong. You would be surprised how many other countries, particularly African, Asian and Eastern European, have the same characteristic to varying degrees.

Yeah, it makes a point about the Russian having to some exten a very similar compartmentalised, officers versus ORs, secrecy based military ethos...
