Do units in buildings get a save if they are hit during an assault.

Would that still be the case for any subsequent rounds of close combat, when attacker and defender are both in the open and hit on 4s?

No don't think so, attackers are inside the cover.

Thanks. I wonder for subsequent rounds all are now in the open, a

That's how I'd read it, after the first round the attackers are in the building with the defenders so all would be treated as in the open.
